Welcome to Banff, Canada

The town of Banff in the southwestern corner of the park, about 90 minutes west of Calgary via the Trans Canada Highway.

The Hamlet of Lake Louise is 50 minutes further west, also within Banff National Park.

The town is only four square kilometers, bordered on all sides by wilderness. It's not uncommon to see wildlife, such as deer and elk, in your backyard.

The town is a service centre for park visitors and offers everything from five-star accommodation to fine dining, lively nightlife to museums and galleries, shopping for essentials and nice to haves, plus a long line up of special cultural and sporting events.

We're a national park community surrounded by spectacular nature, so the natural environment is important to us. The town has implemented a number of programs to protect, preserve, conserve and rehabilitate, and is guided by The Banff National Park Management Plan.

Things to do

The heritage town of Banff and the spectacular Banff National Park, chosen the top destination in Canada by international travellers, offers resplendent Rocky Mountain vistas under an Alberta blue sky.

Our climate also offers:

Low humidity
Warm temperatures averaging between 21º and 22º Celsius (70º and 72º F)
Extended daylight hours: beyond 11 p.m. at the summer solstice

All of these factors add up to perfect conditions for summer activities. Some of our visitors' favorite summer attractions include:

Hiking and Walking Near Town
Hiking in the National Park

A word of advice for visitors: the UV rating in Banff National Park tends to be high. Between the altitude and the angle of sun in this area, people burn easily: sunscreen, sunglasses and a good wide-brimmed sun hat are must haves for your visit.

Shopping:

The streets of Banff offer a mosaic of uniquely Canadian shopping opportunities for visitors and locals alike.

Visitors who are looking for gifts and souvenirs can explore any number of specialty shops offering a vast selection of souvenir items and memorabilia.

Several gift shops highlight the work of aboriginal artists and artisans, an integral part of Banff's Rocky Mountain heritage. Similarly, the many art galleries in the area celebrate the mountain artwork of local and Canadian artists.

Given the needs of the local residents, all basic shopping amenities can be found in Banff, including:
